The Ultimate CV Writing Tips
Just follow these points...
- Decide whether you are writing a chronological CV,
skills CV or an academic CV. You must tailor it to the
job you are applying for.
- Write in a clear, professional and positive style
- Keep your CV to two sides of A4 paper
- Put your most important skills at the beginning. ?
Give an example for every skill you say you have.
- Use headings to separate the main sections.
- Don't use dense blocks of text, large blank spaces
or lots of different fonts or italics.
- Make sure is grammatically correct and everything
is spelt right.
Use words like this to describe
yourself...Accomplished, achieved, adapted, analysed,
broadened, communicated, competed, enabled, improved,
evaluated, implemented, motivated, negotiated, organised,
persuaded, planned, prepared, supervised and utilised.
And also these... Approachable, assertive, committed,
competent, creative, diligent, energetic, enthusiastic,
imaginative, natural leader, perceptive, problem solver,
responsive, self aware and team worker.
It's also very important to include a stunning cover
letter with your CV.
There are three ways of using a covering letter:
1. Introducing a CV for a job you are applying for.
2. A letter accompanying an application form.
3. A speculative letter when you are chasing a job
that is not being advertised.
The best covering letters will...
- Explain why you are writing
- Emphasize why you are perfect for the job and why
they should meet you
- Target the right person to read it
- Tell them your current situation
- Reinforce your contact details with the employer.
Make sure you re-read the job description or if it is
a speculative approach make sure you know a lot about
the company and mention in it in your letter. Make it
easy for the potential employer to spot what they are
looking for.
How to prepare a covering letter...
- Make sure it is the same style as the CV - use the
same font etc.
- Keep it brief, make sure it fits on one side of A4.
- Check the grammar and spelling as before.
- Write it to someone, get the name of this person.
(Phone the company if you have to find out who it is).
- Sign the letter unless you are sending via email.
-End the letter with 'Yours faithfully'
Good luck!
